THE MILLSAPS HOOKS PROJECT

FACULTY PLEASURE READING PICKS (from the 1/19/07 Millsaps Forum)

Kim Burke
Nonfiction
Eric Larson – Thunderstruck and Devil in the White City
Nathanael Philbrick – Mayflower
Fiction
Boris Akunin – The Winter Queen, The Turkish Gambit, Murder on the Leviathan and Death of Achilles (Russian Sherlock Holmes)
Pete Hautman – Godless (kids worshipping the water tower)
Philip Pullman’s Kim–His Dark Materials trilogy – The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass
T.H. White – The Once and Future King, The Book of Merlin

Ramon Figueroa
Stephen Baxter – Manifold Time, Manifold Space, Manifold Origin, Evolution (my favorite. It has a great ending), and Ring.
Neil Gaiman – Anansi Boys, American Gods, and The Sandman (if you don’t mind graphic novels, you will enjoy this. It is a very literary comic book. If you don’t want to read the whole saga, pick up “Preludes and Nocturnes” where you will find the story based on “A midsummer night’s dream” and “A dream of a thousand cats”).

Paula Garrett
Clyde Edgerton – Raney
John Irving – A Prayer for Owen Meany
Harper Lee – To Kill A Mockingbird
Kaye Gibbons – Charms for the Easy Life, Diving Women
Lee Smith – Fair and Tender Ladies, Saving Grace
Sarah Waters – Tipping the Velvet, Affinity, Fingersmith

Patrick Hopkins
J. R. R. Tolkien – The Lord of the Rings trilogy
Philip Pullman – Kim: His Dark Materials trilogy
