They must be clearly labeled "student essay" to distinguish them
from regular submissions. The best student submissions are eligible for cash
prizes ($150 and $100) and a place on the conference program.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: On Saturday April 8, the Ole Miss football team is holding its annual Red-Blue scrimmage. This will likely snarl traffic before and after the game. The directions that follow may not give the shortest routes, but they do give the ones that avoid stadium traffic.
Directions to Barnard Observatory
FROM MEMPHIS, TN, VIA I-55: From Memphis, Tennessee, take I-55 south for 63
miles. Take the Batesville/Oxford exit off I-55. Merge onto MS-6 and proceed
east toward Oxford, Mississippi, for approximately 23 miles. Turn left at
the traffic light on MS-6 onto West Jackson Avenue. Proceed approximately
two miles, past the Oxford Mall/Malco movie theater (on your left) and the
west entrance to the University of Mississippi. Turn right at the fourth traffic
light after the Mall (Sorority Row). Barnard Observatory is at the top of
the hill on the right; before you get to the top of the hill there is open
parking to the left.
FROM JACKSON, MS: From Jackson, Mississippi, take I-55 north for 150 miles. Take the Batesville/Oxford exit off I-55. Then follow the remaining directions above.
FROM TUPELO, MS: From Tupelo, take MS-6 west for approximately 56 miles. Turn right at the traffic light on MS-6 onto West Jackson Avenue. Then follow the remaining directions above.
FROM MEMPHIS, TN, VIA HWY 78: From Memphis, Tennessee, take US-78 to the Holly Springs/Oxford exit. From Holly Springs, take MS-7 south for approximately 28 miles. Turn right onto Molly Barr Road (left/west is MS-30). Follow Molly Barr approximately three miles (past the Oxford Police Department) to the stop sign for Washington Avenue. Turn right. Proceed on Washington Avenue for 200 yards, straight through the traffic light onto Sorority Row. Barnard Observatory is at the top of the hill on the right; before you get to the top of the hill there is open parking to the left.
Hotels - There are rooms available at the Super 8 Motel on West Jackson Avenue. The phone number is 662/234-7013. Due to the football game, most of the other hotels in Oxford are already booked. If you are unable to book a hotel room in Oxford, call Neil Manson at 662/915-6713 no later than 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 30th.
Dinner Friday - Anyone interested in joining Dr. Mills for dinner before the talk Friday should meet at 5:00 at Ajax Diner, which is right on the Square in downtown Oxford. To get to the Square from MS-6, head north on the South Lamar Avenue exit (about three miles east of the West Jackson Avenue exit). To get to the Square from MS-7, head west on the University Avenue exit (about three miles past the Molly Barr Road exit).
