McAtee Awarded
Udall Environmental Scholarship Sarah K. McAtee, a junior majoring in biology and history, is one of 80 recipients of this years Morris K. Udall Scholarship Award. The Morris K. Udall Foundation awards scholarships of up to $5,000 to undergraduates who demonstrate excellence in environmental science and related fields. McAtee, who has maintained a 3.7 gpa, plans to obtain a Ph.D. in agricultural science. She hopes to pursue a career in agricultural research, working to replace harmful chemical fertilizers and pesticides with environment-friendly alternatives. Sarah is a very bright and highly motivated student, says Associate Professor of Biology Robert B. Nevins, who recommended her for the award. I believe she will be a productive scholar in progress towards sound agricultural practices. McAtee was instrumental in creating the Millsaps chapter of E.A.R.T.H, a student environmental action group. She has been an active member of the chapter, which sponsors an annual Earth Day celebration, since 1998. As a student employee at a sand processing plant in Theodore, Alabama, McAtee developed a paper recycling program in order to reduce office waste. She has also spent time recovering artifacts from a Native American burial ground as part of a University of Alabama research project. My education at Millsaps has given me the knowledge and resources that it takes to compete for scholarships on a national level, and it has also prepared me for a satisfying career in environmental science. McAtee is the daughter of Suzanne McAtee of Mobile, Alabama. She is a member of numerous honoraries and clubs. PREVIOUS PAGE | PAGE 1 OF 1 | NEXT PAGE |
