Walker Honored
for Brains and Beauty In the past decade, emphasis on the intelligence and leadership abilities of beauty contestants has steadily grown. Whether due to criticism by the media, forward thinking, or the changing role of women in society, contestants now need beauty and brains to claim their titles. Brandi Walker, who graduated in May as a Spanish, French and premed major with minors in music and chemistry, won the Miss Magnolia Scholarship Pageant. ![]() Brandi has been a positive role model and a wonderful ambassador for the College throughout her years here, says Sherryl Wilburn, Millsaps Director for Multicultural Affairs. Walker approves of the emphasis now being placed on the intelligence of pageant contestants. I chose to participate in the Miss America Pageant system because more than 70% of a contestants total score is based on talent, personality and intelligence, Walker said. Her platform is the improvement of health care for the rapidly growing Spanish-speaking population in Mississippi, a topic which relates closely to her modern languages majors. Scholarship awards are the primary reason that I compete in pageants, said Walker, who won the Metro Jackson Miss Hospitality pageant in 1998. Walker, the daughter of Booker and Gale Walker of Jackson, will go on to compete in the Miss Mississippi Pageant. She is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, Order of Omega, Millsaps Judicial Council, wind ensemble, and Millsaps Honor Council. PREVIOUS PAGE | PAGE 1 OF 1 | NEXT PAGE |
