Schrader Wins
Goldwater Scholarship

Millsaps junior Melanie Schrader is one of only 304 students in the nation to win a 1999 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship this year.

The Goldwater Scholars were selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,181 mathematics, science, and engineering students nominated by their faculties. The scholarships cover educational costs up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.

Schrader is a biology major and has maintained a 4.0 g.p.a. throughout college. She plans to pursue a career in medical research, emphasizing antibiotic resistance and the development of new antibiotics.

“Melanie is certainly deserving of this honor. She is extremely talented and works very, very hard,” states biology professor Sarah Lea McGuire, who nomi-nated Schrader for the award.

Last summer, Schrader worked with Dr. McGuire as a research assistant in genetics. As part of a National Institute of Health (NIH) grant, Schrader cultivated fungus cells to better understand the cell cycle and the proteins involved in cell division. She is continuing her work with McGuire as part of an Honors project and is an intern in oncology this summer at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

“Millsaps has provided me with many undergraduate research-training opportunities that have heightened my curiosity and improved my ability to solve problems,” says Schrader.

Schrader has received the Tribette Scholarship as the junior with the highest g.p.a. and the general chemistry award. She is vice-president of Chi Omega sorority and is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, Sigma Lambda honorary, Beta Beta Beta biology honorary, AED national pre-med honorary, the American Chemical Society, Phi Eta Sigma scholastic honorary, and the Campus Ministry Team. She is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Edward L. Schrader of Clinton.
