Parks Retires
from Library Jim Parks will retire as the College Librarian on December 31, 1999. He will be succeeded by Tom Henderson, the Associate Librarian for Public Services, who will assume the position of Acting College Librarian. Jim Parks came to Millsaps as the College Librarian in 1969 and has served the College for 30 years. He has done an outstanding job of allocating the librarys limited resources for maximum effect. In recent years, he has worked hard to build the electronic capabilities and resources of the library in ways that compare favorably with other high-quality liberal arts colleges. Perhaps his most significant accomplishment as Librarian has been to create a library staff that is firmly dedicated to serving the faculty, students, and alumni of Millsaps. In addition to his responsibilities as Librarian, Parks has been a major contributor to the life and direction of the College. In the early 1990s, he was the second president of the Faculty Council and helped that body to become a genuine voice of the faculty. He also served as the chair of the Faculty Affairs Committee and helped develop many of the policies in the Faculty Handbook. In my time at Millsaps, Jim been an important force in shaping the future of the College, states Richard A. Smith, Dean of the College. He played a significant role as a member of the Information Technology Task Force and helped conceive of and make possible the building of the computer instruction lab in the library. He has also been an effective advocate for the library and has worked closely with me on the recent library renovations and on securing increased resources for the print and electronic collections. As to retirement, Parks looks forward to reading and cycling. PREVIOUS PAGE | PAGE 1 OF 1 | NEXT PAGE |
