What I'm Reading
by Gary L. Fretwell, Vice President

In 1992, Harry S. Dent Jr. published his now famous book, The Great Boom Ahead. As you might recall the U.S. economy was not in very good shape at that point. In spite of the dismal economic condition, Dent maintained and correctly predicted the economic growth we have enjoyed in the United States for the past 8 years. I was fortunate to come across Mr. Dent’s book, and found his remarks to be very consistent with my own thoughts.

In his newest book, The Roaring 2000’s, Mr. Dent goes on to make his case for continued optimism and makes what I found to be an optimistic argument for our economic future.

Mr. Dent points out that one of the major reasons for the bright economic future is the aging baby boomers and their influence on the economy. As Mr. Dent points out, this group which has continued to have major influences on our economy since their birth are moving into their most productive years. He makes the case that for the next 10 years they will continue to feed the economic engine of the United States. In addition, Mr. Dent makes a number of interesting points regarding the influence of technology, especially the internet. He does not limit his comments to the internet, he also talks about advances in travel and communications. I must caution you that Mr. Dent also has some sobering predictions of the effects of the baby boomers once they leave their economically productive years.

I enjoy Mr. Dent’s optimism and his willingness to look to the past as well as the future to make his points. If you would like to read a book that attempts to challenge your ideas about the future on a number of economic issues, I recommend The Roaring 2000’s.
