Russia

“The amazing thing to me in Russia was the amount of religious icons you see. They probably have more churches than Italy. And to see them begin to open up is quite an experience. We went into a church in the Baltics and heard a glorious choir. I turned to my guide and said, ‘Is this on tape?’ He said, ‘No, these three people sitting in the pew are singing.’ The acoustics in the church were that marvelous.”

“We also visited the church whose bells rang out in 1862 in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of Russia’s defeat of Napoleon. It was at this church that Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture was first performed. Stalin had the church torn down, and a public pool was built in its place. The church has been built back in its original form, and it is now a museum.”
