Accounting Firms
Welcome Else School Students Did you ever wish you had known more about your first job before you started it? Junior accounting students at the Millsaps Else School of Management were thinking the same thing. Thats why they recently participated in the Executive Shadowing Program. This program was motivated by the comments of many former students who expressed a desire to know more about the accounting environment before they began work, says Dr. Kim Burke, director of the accounting programs at the Else School. This was the first year for the program, and I think it was quite successful. The primary objective of the program is to give students an opportunity to spend a half-day with key members of public accounting firms, learning about general operations and careers in public accounting. Each firm structured its half-day program to best suit its own operations, so the students experiences were quite varied. Some firms had students shadow a partner or senior manager throughout the day. Others had students speak with executives at their firm. As part of the assignment, students wrote papers about their experiences. Dr. Burke commented, I believe these papers provide valuable information about our programs at Millsaps. Some of the students observations were very insightful. Many students commented on the importance of good communication skills, while others observed that accounting is really a team profession. Host firms included Arthur Andersen; Collins & Corbins; Deloitte & Touche; Ernst & Young; Haddox, Reid, Burkes & Calhoun; Horne CPA Group; KPMG Peat Marwick; and Smith, Turner and Reeves.
