Howard Baker
Speaks at Arts & Lecture Series On the eve of the upcoming presidential election, former senator and White House Chief of Staff Howard Baker Jr. made a special appearance at Millsaps on October 24. Tennessee Senator from 1967 to 1985, Howard Baker served two terms as minority leader and two terms as majority leader in the Senate. The keynote speaker at the Republican National Convention of 1976, he made an unsuccessful bid for the Republican presidential nomination in 1980. While Chief of Staff in President Reagan's administration, he guided the presidency through the Iran-Contra scandal. Baker, who also served as a delegate to the United Nations, first won national recognition in 1973 as the Vice Chairman of the Senate Watergate Committee. He has received numerous awards during his career, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He is the author of No Margin for Error, Howard Baker's Washington, and Big South Fork Country.
