Freis Wins Award as Humanities Teacher

Dr. Catherine R. Freis, Professor and Chair of the Department of Classical Studies, received the Humanities Teacher Award from the Mississippi Humanities Council. The Council celebrates Arts and Humanities Month by recognizing faculty members who have made major contributions to the humanities. As the year 2000 Millsaps recipient, Freis delivered a lecture titled "Death and Dying in the Western World" on October 5 to the Millsaps community.

Freis received her Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, and she has taught at Millsaps since 1975. She received Millsaps' Distinguished Professor Award in 1985, and was awarded the American Philological Association National Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Classics in 1981. Freis is the co-author of the classical Greek textbook Ancient Greek Alive.

Freis has been largely responsible for shaping the Millsaps curriculum and ensuring its continued success at the forefront of liberal arts education. As Chair of Classical Studies and the past director of both the core curriculum and liberal studies programs, she has worked tirelessly to ensure the intellectual vitality of programs that influence graduates’ lives.

“Dr. Freis inspires a fierce loyalty among her students,” states Dr. Richard Smith, Vice President and Dean of the College. “She guides them with rigor and compassion toward a mature understanding of the liberal arts, while preparing them for careers in law, medicine, business, teaching and all other fields in which careful thought is paramount.”
