O’Beirne and Reynolds
Receive Rotary Scholarships

Millsaps students Meg O’Beirne and Stacy Reynolds have been awarded Rotary Scholarships for the 2000-2001 academic year. O’Beirne will attend the Univer- sity of Western Sydney in New South Wales, Australia, and Reynolds has been assigned to study and serve at the University of Salamanca in Salamanca, Spain.

This year, Rotary International sent 1,300 college students to study and spread goodwill in 50 nations. The Ambassadorial Scholarships provide funding for one academic year of study in another country. This award is intended to help cover round-trip transportation, tuition, fees, room and board expenses, and some educational supplies.

Meg O’Beirne, an aspiring occupational therapist, was influenced to apply for the Ambassadorial Scholarship through the experience of her older brother, who represented Rotary International in Sheffield, England, two years ago. “I am very committed to community service,” she says, “and this scholarship will be a great opportunity for me to continue my studies while serving as an ambassador for Rotary in an exciting country.”

Upon her return from Australia, O’Beirne will relate her experiences to Rotary Clubs throughout Mississippi. A native of Natchez, she is the daughter of Tommy and Pokey O’Beirne.

Stacy Reynolds has worked with Rotary International since high school, when she was chosen to study as an exchange student in Central America. Having a passion for foreign policy, she left Mexico fluent in Spanish and inspired to help the less fortunate.

“At one point a hurricane passed through and some of the nearby coastal villages were completely wiped out,” says Reynolds. “The local Rotary Club supplied food and clothing to the ravaged storm victims.”

“I really believe in Rotary’s goals. Despite varying political and economic factors, Rotary Clubs everywhere strongly enforce ideals of peace and aid,” she said. Rey- nolds, a native of Monroe, La., is the daughter of James and Cindy Reynolds.
