Marrs Is Appointed Stewart Professor

Suzanne Marrs, Professor of English, has been appointed to hold the E. B. Stewart Family Professorship in Language and Literature. The Stewart Professorship is awarded on a competitive basis for a two-year term to support the scholarly work of a faculty member teaching in the area of language and literature. It carries a reduced teaching load, a summer stipend, and a research and travel fund. Dr. Greg Miller currently holds the professorship. In past years, Dr. Judith Page and Dr. Marrs have also held the position.

Dr. Marrs is widely regarded as a fine teacher and an important contributor to the life of Millsaps College. She is also a nationally recognized scholar on the work of Eudora Welty. With the support of the Stew- art Professorship, she plans to complete a book-length study of Welty's creative processes. This study not only examines the biographical and literary sources of her work, but also the way her fiction grew out of the culture and social environment in which she was writing.

After this study is completed, Dr. Marrs plans to begin a second book-length study on the life and work of Welty. This study will require extensive travel to manuscript collections in several states, and the Stewart Professorship will provide the necessary time and financial support to facilitate the project.

“Millsaps is very fortunate to have Dr. Marrs as a member of its faculty,” says Richard Smith, Vice President and Dean of the College. “Her appointment to the Stewart Professorship is one small way for the College to indicate how much it values her work and accomplishments.”
