Log 4,334 Community Service Hours Ever wonder whats wrong with young people today? Not much, except that they are extremely busy. According to the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning, students at Millsaps spent more than 4,300 hours participating in community service projects last year. These student volunteers started out by teaching children at nearby elementary schools how to read. Using pre- and post-testing, researchers determined that reading proficiency of children tutored by Campus Link volunteers increased an average of 2.07 reading levels in 1998-99. In addition to tutoring through Campus Link, Millsaps students also made Jackson a better place by cleaning up local community centers and spearheading a campus-sponsored Martin Luther King Day program. It is a pleasure to work with students who have such a strong motivation to use their time and abilities on behalf of the human family, said Don Fortenberry, Millsaps Chaplain. In the midst of busy schedules crowded with academic tasks, jobs, campus leadership positions and other responsibilities, a wonderful group of students volunteer each semester. They are a delight and an inspiration. When they log 4,300 tutoring and service hours in a year, they are demonstrating the type of commitment that we at Millsaps want to stand for. While Millsaps has always been known for its emphasis on community service, the College is strengthening its efforts through Challenge and other initiatives. Highlighted in the last Millsaps Magazine, Challenge is a program that brings incoming freshmen to campus each summer for a week of service, workshops, and other volunteerism-centered activities.
