Football: A Year of Rebuilding

After an inspiring 8-2 record and conference championship in 1996, the football team fell short of expectations by finishing 3-7.  Returning only five seniors and five juniors, it was a year of rebuilding and growth for the young team.
Several players distinguished themselves with fine performances, such as junior Beau Pollard.  Pollard led the conference in total offense (2,109 yards and 20 TDs), breaking many Millsaps passing records.  Pollard, Mike McKenzie, Wes Ingram, and Matt Huard were named First Team All-Conference.  Freshman Jason Cabell led the injured-besieged defense with an impressive 94 tackles.  With such talent returning, next season should be a good one for coach Jurney and the team.
