Women's Studies Conference "Becoming Visible: Women's Struggles for Justice"

The Third Biennial Associated Colleges of the South Women's Studies Conference was held October 24, 25, and 26 at Millsaps.
"Becoming Visible: Women's Struggles for Justice" included topics such as women and welfare, women authors, advertisements and the female body image, self-defense, and divorce.
Professor Anne McMaster devoted two years to planning the conference, in addition to her normal commitments to the Department of English and the Women's Studies Program at Millsaps.  In particular, she focused on making sure that it was a truly interdisciplinary conference that would attract speakers and audience members from numerous fields.  The hard work of McMaster, Associate Dean Judith Page, and others paid off.
"I found the conference to be very rewarding," said a participant.  "The level of the scholarship, as well as the accessibility of the material, was top-notch."
Conference presenters included faculty and students from Millsaps and other member schools in the Associated Colleges of the South (ACS).  Presentations utilized media ranging from artwork to film to the internet.  The weekend also included poetry and fiction readings, a musical recital, and a performance by the Nina Storey Band.
The keynote address was given by Gloria Wade-Gayles, Director of Women's Studies at Spelman College.
