Payne Wins
Goldwater Scholarship For the third year in a row, a Millsaps student has been awarded a coveted Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. Angela Payne, a junior biology major, is one of 309 students from across the nation selected for the prestigious honor. Established by Congress in 1986, the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation seeks to provide academic opportunities for outstanding U.S. students. This years Goldwater Scholars were selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,176 mathematics, science, and engineering students nominated by faculties nationwide. The award covers expenses up to a maximum of $7,500 per year. Payne, a native of Baton Rouge, La., has maintained a 3.96 gpa at Millsaps. Her research experience includes testing soil samples for Louisiana agriculturalists and studying mutated cell reproduction patterns to determine what makes some cells multiply faster than others. A May 2000 graduate, Payne plans to obtain a Ph.D. in molecular and cellular biology and pursue a career in biomedical research. She has a long- standing, deep commitment to a career in biological research, says Assistant Professor of Biology Dr. Sarah Lea McGuire. Angela is extremely talented, both intellectually and in her laboratory skills. She has consistently pursued difficult, challenging and diverse courses in the sciences with superior performance in all. Angela will not only succeed, but she will be a leader in her chosen field. The small college atmosphere at Millsaps has allowed me to work very closely with the faculty of the biology department, says Payne. I have received the personal attention that is imperative to mastering important biological processes, making learning less like a lecture and more like a conversation. My hands-on experience in a well-equipped lab has prepared me for the world of professional research. In addition, the availability of humanities classes has allowed me to step outside the science departments, broadening my education as a whole, not merely training me for a job in research. Payne is a member of Sigma Lambda, a leadership fraternity, and the Order of Omega, which recognizes outstanding Greek leaders. She is also a member of the Millsaps Campus Ministry Team and Phi Mu sorority. She is the daughter of Rodger and Janice Payne of Baton Rouge. PREVIOUS PAGE | PAGE 1 OF 1 | NEXT PAGE |
