Sciences Sarah Armstrong (bio.) has been appointed to the Board of the Mississippi Science Network, which supports educational programs at the Davis Planetarium. Connie Campbell (math) co-authored a paper, A Minimum Degree Condition for Wheels, accepted by the Bulletin of the Institute of Combinatorics and its Applications. She presented a talk titled Student Development in the Understanding of Proof at the Mathematical Association of America meeting in Lafayette, La. R. W. McCarley (comp. sci.) presented a paper on integrating the use of several software packages at the Consortium for Computing in Small Colleges at the South Central Regional meeting at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. He serves on the steering committee. Sarah McGuire (bio.) received a three-year $100,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health to fund her cell cycle research program. Jeanne Middleton (edu.) was the guest speaker at the G.V. Sonny Montgomery VA Medical Center Womens History Month celebration. Jimmie Purser (chem-comp. sci.) presented a workshop titled Asynchronous Delivery of Instruction and Materials at Washington and Lee University. Donald Schwartz (comp. sci.) presented Fuzzy Set Theory Support for Design Alternatives in a Generic Design Environment at the International Conference on Intelligent Systems in Louisville. Bob Shive (math-comp. sci.) served on a reaffirmation committee for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, chairing the section on Academic Programs; Elise Smith (art) also participated as an observer. SACS uses the observer program to assist colleges preparing for re-accreditation. Kurt Thaw (psy.) received a grant from the New York Obesity Research Center to study the effects of the immune system on feeding behavior. His research assistants T.J. Quinn and Sarah Fontenelle received grants based on research conducted in his lab. Tim Ward (chem.) and students Brad Farris and Kellie Woodling attended the Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry in New Orleans; Johnnie-Marie Whitfield (chem.), Ward, and these students attended the Spring National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in San Francisco. The students presented their research in New Orleans and San Francisco. The chemistry department hosted the Mississippi Section of the American Chemical Society Mid-Winter Symposium on Biotechnology.
