Founders Medalist


Melanie Schrader, the daughter of Dr. Ed and Myra Schrader of Clinton, is the 2000 Founders Medalist. The Founders Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon a Millsaps student, is awarded to the graduating senior with the highest quality index for the entire college course and an excellent on comps. Schrader has been accepted to a M.D. program at Wake Forest University, where she will begin studies in the fall. She earned an honorable mention position on USA Today All-USA College Academic Team and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Who’s Who Among American College Students, the Campus Ministry Team, and other organizations.

Millsaps held its 106th Commencement on Saturday, May 13. Mr. Edward L. Moyers, retired CEO of the Mid South, Illinois Central, and Southern Pacific Railroads, delivered the commencement address. Moyers is overseeing the construction in Brazil of the world’s largest railroad system ever built as a single project. A native of Vicksburg, he is a Life Trustee of Millsaps College. In his speech, which is posted at www.millsaps.edu, Moyers encouraged students to work hard, dream big, and have the patience and dedication necessary to make those dreams a reality.

Following Moyers’s address, President Harmon presented him with a Doctor of Laws degree for being “a pioneering businessman and educational advocate who has brought prosperity to the people of two continents.” Dr. Samuel Jones, founder and former dean of the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, was awarded the Doctor of Humane Letters degree for being “a gifted composer, conductor, and educator whose dedication to music has greatly enriched our nation.” Bishop Marshall L. Meadors, Jr., Resident Bishop of the the Mississippi Conference of the United Methodist Church, was awarded the Doctor of Humane Letters degree for being “a dedicated minister and leader for social change who has upheld faith, hope, and love through his stewardship of the United Methodist Church.” Paul Piper, Sr., retired Chairman of the Board and CEO of Piper Industries, was awarded the Doctor of Laws degree for “selflessly devoting his life to the personal growth and spiritual development of the nation’s youth.” The late Jean C. Lindsey, president of the Chisholm Foundation, was awarded the Doctor of Humane Letters for “greatly advancing the cause of higher education through her tireless leadership and philanthropy.”

Vice President and Dean of the College Richard Smith granted emeritus status to professors Jim Parks, Harrylyn Sallis, Charles Sallis, and President Harmon (see page 31). He also awarded the Founders Medal to Melanie Schrader.

Bishop Marshall L. Meadors, Jr. presented the Baccalaureate Address on Friday, May 12.
