Thatcher Is Inaugural Speaker for Millsaps Nova Series Millsaps College is pleased to announce the formation of the Millsaps Nova Series, a new annual educational lecture and seminar series. Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher will be the inaugural speaker of the series on Wednesday, September 20, 2000, at 7 p.m. in the Christian Center Auditorium. The Millsaps Nova Series will feature addresses by individuals of international standing who have played transforming roles in fields such as science, education, business, government, religion, and the arts. These pioneers have shed new light on issues of critical importance to their professions, their communities, their nations, or the world and have set a standard of excellence that will be recognized for years to come. The Millsaps Nova Series showcases the principles of Millsaps College freedom of inquiry and expression and brings together experts for a discussion of cultural, social, economic, and political changes affecting the state of Mississippi and the nation at large. As it evolves, The Millsaps Nova Series will include lectures and discussions by students, faculty, and community leaders that further reinforce the importance of visionary leadership in the shaping of public policy and personal beliefs. Lady Thatcher was appointed Prime Minister, First Lord of the Treasury and Minister of Civil Service in 1979. When Britains Conservative Party subsequently won the General Elections in 1983 and 1987, Margaret Thatcher became the first Prime Minister this century to successfully contest three consecutive general elections. After resigning as Prime Minister in November 1990, she was awarded the Order of Merit by Her Majesty the Queen of England. In June 1992, she was elevated to the House of Lords to become Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven. Presently, she serves as Chairman of the Board for the Institute of U.S. Studies at London University. In addition to being an outstanding leader, diplomat, politician, and orator, Lady Thatcher has published two volumes of memoirs, The Downing Street Years (1993) and The Path to Power (1995). Ticket information will be made available in the late summer.
