The Global Village:
Summer Study Abroad Millsaps is offering study
abroad programs to Central Europe, Costa Rica, London and many other exciting destinations
for the summer of 1999. These summertime opportunities, which are open to the public,
include a variety of courses ranging from business classes to Ethics in the Global
Environment to foreign language study to European history.
Traveling abroad can lead to better job opportunities and a
heightened awareness of other cultures, says Dr. Robert Kahn, Director of the Millsaps
Summer Program in Costa Rica. "In todays marketplace studying a foreign
language or culture is not a frill, but a very practical thing to do. Students
obtain better jobs when they learn about the language and culture from firsthand
experience, which is exactly what our programs give them."
For slightly more money than he or she would spend to study on
campus, a student can study abroad and gain knowledge of other countries. Dr. Penelope
Prenshaw of the Else School of Management comments, "Exposure to and interaction with
international culture is a great learning experience. No textbook could give you such
understanding."
In the Summer in London, Paris, Munich and Prague program,
students enroll in classes from the Millsaps Division of Arts and Letters (such as
"Medieval Art and Architecture") or from the Division of Sciences (such as
"The Discovery of Diversity"). This six-week program features field trips
and guest speakers integrated into the curriculum. Directed by Dr. Stephen Black, Millsaps
faculty design and teach all courses.
Senior Rachel Barham of Tupelo participated in the Summer in
London, Paris, Munich and Prague program and then spent the following fall in a program in
Hungary. After graduation, Barham plans to return to Hungary and teach conversational
English while learning more about the unique language and history of the country. "I
think studying abroad is essential to a liberal arts education, she says. "Everyone
should have such exposure to the real similarities and differences between our culture and
others. It opens your eyes to so much more of the world."
Students can also choose to take classes
through the Else School of Management. Both undergraduate and graduate business courses
are offered. Excursions to BMW, British Aerospace, Siemens and more provide a first-hand
look at business practices in different parts of Europe. Dr. Penelope Pren- shaw is
directing this program.
The Summer in Nice, France program gives students the
opportunity to spend four weeks learning French in the heart of the Riviera. Lodging and
meals are provided by local families. The curriculum includes weekly lectures on French
history and customs, as well as regular field trips to cultural sites in downtown Nice.
Only students with at least one year of French may attend. Dr. Claudine Chadeyras is
directing this program.
In the Summer in Costa Rica program, students interested in
Spanish attend classes at the Central American Institute for International Affairs.
Millsaps professors provide an excellent balance of cultural activities and educational
experiences. Participating students live with carefully selected families. Only students
with at least one year of Spanish may attend. Dr. Robert Kahn is directing this
program.
