Millsaps students attend 68th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Professor Bey and alumnus Ben Witt swap stories.
A group of five Millsaps students ventured to the cold, desolate North (okay, not so cold or desolate) in mid-April to attend the 68th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology, one of the largest conventions of professional archaeologists in the world.
At the convention, the students attended various symposia on topics ranging from the symbolic layouts of Maya city-states to technical Geographic Information Systems lectures to debates about archaeologists' relationships to Native Americans.

Senior anthropology majors Hannah Page and Caroline Ficara check out the local fashion scene.
Despite the ominous appearance of snow on the ground at the airport, the group was happy to find that local temperatures were well into the comfortable range -- for most members. ;)
This year's Millsaps Night led the group to Milwaukee's famous Safe House... *ahem*, that is, International Exports, Ltd., where ritual feasting followed a brief entrance interrogation.
"OK guys, show me your scary faces."

Senior anthropology majors Hannah Page and Tim Parsons make (crooked) use of a photo op.
Sophomore anthropology major Doc Billingsley presented a paper co-written with Dr. Mike Galaty at a symposium for the archaeology of the Carpathian Basin. The paper was entitled "Site Soil Chemistry at Vészto-Bikeri, Békés County, Hungary" and is available on-line along with his Powerpoint presentation.

Hannah's having a blast!

Jonathan Haws of Blue Ridge fame visits with some of his former fieldmates.

"I arrived in Milwaukee after a short detour to watch the Cubs play at Wrigley. The meeting, albeit seemingly small in numbers, did not disappoint. Doc Billingsley delivered a paper we had co-authored, on soil phosphate analysis at the Vésztö 20 site in Hungary. And, we hosted a book party for my colleague, Bill Parkinson (Florida State U.), whose edited volume The Archaeology of Tribal Societies (in which I have a paper on Albanian tribal systems) was just published. Overall, it was nice to be back in my homeland, Wisconsin."
--Professor Mike Galaty

After an exhausting day of symposia and an enormous Middle Eastern feast, sophomore anthropology major Doc Billingsley appreciates the coziness of his hotel room.
