The Millsaps College Career Center offers individual Career Coaching to all students. Topics of assistance include self-assessment and career exploration, planning and implementing job search strategies, writing resumes and cover letters, and preparing for interviews. Students may schedule appointments by e-mailing the Career Center. We also have walk-in hours Monday through Thursday from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.
Individual career coaching helps students address the following questions:
- Who am I and how do I see myself fitting into the world of work?
- Where do I want to go?
- How do I get there?
Currently we offer three assessments to assist students with the above goals. They are FOCUS, the Strong Interest Inventory, and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. The decision to use one of these assessment inventories - and which inventory would best serve the student's needs - is made by the student and counselor during a career coaching session.
We also encourage students to visit our Career Resource Center, where they will find a host of career-related resources pertaining to career choices, resume writing, the job search, and interviewing (many available for check-out).
Assessments:
FOCUS is a Web-based, personalized career and education planning system based on established career and counseling principles. It provides a complete picture of interests, values, personality, skills, and leisure activities using self-assessment questionnaires, interest inventories and personality testing. After assessing personal attributes, the system searches its career and occupational information database to help students identify and analyze occupations and career paths that match their personal characteristics. The Strong-Interest Inventory is a written test that measures the level of interest in occupational areas, activities, school subjects, and work environments, and then compares those interests with working professionals in a wide variety of occupations.
The Myers Briggs Type Indicatoris a personality assessment inventory based on Carl Jung's theory of personality type. It measures personality preferences and can be used to facilitate decisions regarding majors or careers, and it can help students understand and appreciate individual differences in interpersonal relationships.
