1 Campus 1 Community (1C1C) was formed in the fall of 2006 as the embodiment of an institutional commitment to long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships between Millsaps College and our off-campus neighbors.
In conversation with community partners from the Midtown neighborhood, K–12 public schools, and throughout Jackson, 1C1C seeks to share resources and respond to identified need, both inside and outside the Millsaps gates.
Email firstname.lastname@example.org to learn about or share volunteer opportunities! Whether one-time events or sustained partnerships, our distribution list is here to connect student volunteers with community action!
The 1 Campus 1 Community Leadership team is a dedicated group of sophomores, juniors, and seniors who helps 1C1C staff members mobilize the campus for big volunteer opportunities like M.O.V.E. (Millsaps Organized Volunteer Events), Trunk-or-Treat, MLK Day of Service, Block Party, and more! Member of the Leadership Team also take on projects of their own in collaboration with community partners. Want to join? Email email@example.com for more info!
Jennifer Lewton-Yates (firstname.lastname@example.org) is the Director of 1 Campus 1 Community and the Wellspring Living-Learning Community for first-year students. She also teaches Latin and Greek for the Classical Studies Department. Jenni describes her unique role, “I have as many questions relating to what it means to be a part of the bigger community as the students do, and I certainly don’t have all the answers. In 1C1C and Wellspring we work through those questions together as we build relationships with the community and each other. My training in ancient languages and literatures doesn’t give me special insight into community engagement, but it gives me the same broadly based liberal arts skills that Millsaps fosters in its students. We really are in the learning process together –I’ve just been at it a bit longer.”
Alexandra Morphew (email@example.com), the 1 Campus 1 Community Fellow, is a 2016 magna cum laude graduate of Millsaps College. While pursuing her double majors in Sociology/Anthropology and English Alex was a model “Across the Street, Around the Globe” kind of student, serving as a leader for the Challenge program and an active member of the 1C1C leadership team and studying abroad both on faculty-led trips and independently. She looks forward to continuing to contribute to the growth of Millsaps local partnerships through her work as a 1C1C fellow. When not working, she enjoys exploring Jackson’s food and music scenes, seeing the latest play at New Stage, movies, coffee, and keeping up with Deep South’s selection of popsicles.
