McNair Fund - Campus Missions

The 2009 McNair Fund for Christian Missions presentation will take place October 5th at 6 PM in AC 215. Our 2009 participants—Allison Purves, Madei Levey, Callaghan Starrett, Victoria Romano, and Hailey Miranda—will discuss and take questions about their experiences in South African and Jamaica, and Katie Collins will present on the history of the Fund and offer information on the Fund for 2010.

The McNair Fund for Christian Missions, established through the generosity of David McNair, a Millsaps alumnus and local businessman, provides stipends for Millsaps students, faculty, and staff who wish to participate in Christian mission work, especially on an international basis. Mr. McNair’s desire was to support work in mission organizations that could provide life-changing experiences and nurture commitment to mission as integral to the Christian life.

Placements might be during summers, between semesters, for entire semesters, or even for periods of a year, depending on the needs of the agency coordinating the placement and the schedules of participants.

The Fund will provide a stipend toward transportation to and from the site, fees required by the mission agency, and expenses such as room and board during the period of the placement. It is not the intent of the Fund to cover the entire cost of these experiences, but rather to supplement the income from individuals themselves in order to make participation possible.

Since its inception, teams or individuals have worked in Honduras, India, Malawi, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Bolivia, Romania, South Africa, Japan, and the West Bank, with teams during summer 2009 in Jamaica and South Africa. In addition, individuals have worked with Mountain Top in the Appalachian Mountains and at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola.

For further information, please contact Katie Collins.
