FTP instructions:
- To determine the location of file you need to edit, simply refer to the web address of the page. For example, if the web address is /modlang/example.shtml, then the file to be edited would be the filename example.shtml in the folder named modlang . The filename will be the last word(s) at the end of the web address, with the extension .shtml on the end. If you do not see a filename listed at the end of the web address, then the filename is index.shtml or default.shtml (it will be one or the other, not both). There should not be an index.shtml and index.htm or index.html file in the same directory; the web server will only look at one of the files and ignore the others. So make sure your home page filename is either index.shtml or default.shtml.
- Open your FTP program.
- Logon to the system using your user ID (same ID that you use to logon to the network each day) and password (passwords are set and reset by computer services or the college web manager).
- If you get a red error message or are unable to gain access, then please refer to the FTP settings that were given to you in the Dreamweaver training class.
- After logging on to FTP, a drop-down field labeled "Local Site" or "Local System" appears in the top left; the field should read M:\ or whatever your working location will be. A drop-down field labeled "Remote Site" or "Remote System" appears in the top right and displays the remote server location you will be transferring files to. Again refer back to the class instructions on how to set up these locations. After setting this up once, you will not have to perform this step each time you log on.
- Within FTP, select the file from the right ("Remote" or "Server") side that you wish to edit, and move it to the left ("Local") side by clicking the arrow pointing to the left in the middle of the FTP dialogue box. This moves the selected file from the remote server to the local or network drive of your selected working location. If the file you wish to edit does not appear, then it may be saved in another folder. Again, refer to the web page address to determine which folder the file is in (/modlang/example.shtml means the page you are viewing, example.shtml, is in the folder named modlang). If the file is in a different folder, or in another sub-folder under the modlang folder, then double click on that folder to open it and view all files located in that folder. Then select the file and move it over from the right to the left side of FTP using the arrow key.
Dreamweaver Instructions:
- Open Dreamweaver.
- This step is done once and never again.-- You may or may not need to define your new site within Dreamweaver. If you did not define your working site during your Dreamweaver training session, then please refer to the "The Site Folder" section of the web training instructions that were handed out during the training session to setup your working site. Complete the instructions all the way until you see the heading "Create an Index Page." Also, make sure you have saved the .inc files that were given to you in the training session to the INC folder that you should have created in the training session (most likely on your M:\ drive). Again, If you set this up in class then you will not need to do it again.
- Select File, Open from the top navigation bar.
- When the file window opens, select the drive of your working copy area and then select the file you wish to edit.
- Make the edits to the file.
- Save the file by selecting File, Save from the top navigation bar. Make sure all files are saved with the extension of .shtml from this point forward. All filenames and link addresses must be in all lower case, no spaces, and use only the dash or underscore to separate words within the filename (ex. training-class.shtml or training_class.shtml or trainingclass.shtml). Try to keep filenames as short as possible; this will help if this URL address needs to be placed in a printed document of some sort.
FTP instructions:
- Open your FTP program move the edited file from the left side of the FTP window (your working location) back to the right side (remote or server location). Make sure that the correct working location and remote location are selected in the "Local System" and "Remote System" fields.
- Open your web browser and access the web page you made edits to and click the Refresh or Reload button, located on the top navigation bar of the browser (you may also press the F5 key to reload the page). The web page will reload with the edits displayed.
