Music Requirements

General Requirements

All music majors, minors, and certificate candidates studying applied music must attend and participate in regularly scheduled repertoire classes, departmental recitals, and take an examination before the faculty at the end of each semester.

All keyboard certificate candidates are required each semester to accompany either a singer, an instrumentalist, or one of the vocal ensembles.

Major in Music

Students must complete the following required courses for the major:

Students must complete the basic program, which includes the following courses: *MUSC 1000: Integrative Music Theory I

  • *MUSC 1000: Integrative Music Theory I
  • MUSC 1110: Great Works: A Historical Tour Through Western Classical Music
  • MUSC 2000: Integrative Music Theory II
  • MUSC 2010: Integrative Music Theory III
  • MUSC 3010: Analyzing Music History: The Study of Form
  • MUSC 3532: Conducting

*Though Integrative Music Theory I is a prerequisite for all other music theory courses, students with a solid background may test out of the class.

Students must complete TWO music electives from the following list*:

  • MUSC 1100: Beatles
  • MUSC 2100: History of Jazz
  • MUSC 2110: Beethoven
  • MUSC 2120: The Age of Enlightenment—Mozart
  • MUSC 2130: Women in Music
  • MUSC 2140: World Music—Globalization in Sound
  • MUSC 3140: History of Opera

*Other music electives may count, including Music History Special Topics courses, with departmental approval.

Students must complete a senior thesis and comprehensive exam in their major:

  • Comprehensive Exam
  • MUSC 4910 Undergraduate Thesis

In addition, students must fulfill the following requirements:

  • 6 semesters of applied music in one area (one or two credit hours)
  • 6 semesters of participation in an approved (one credit hour) ensemble
  • Keyboard Proficiency exam
  • Attendance at all recitals required by the Music Department

A C- or higher is required for all courses within the major.

Minor in Music

Students may complete the Minor in Music alone or in tandem with the Certificate in Performance.

Students must complete TWO courses in the Integrative Music Theory sequence:

  • *MUSC 1000: Integrative Music Theory I
  • MUSC 2000: Integrative Music Theory II
  • MUSC 2010: Integrative Music Theory III

*Though Integrative Music Theory I is a pre-requisite for all other music theory courses, students with a solid background may test out of the class.

Students must complete one music elective from the following list *:

  • MUSC 1100: The Beatles
  • MUSC 2020: Music and the Mind
  • MUSC 2100: History of Jazz
  • MUSC 2110: Beethoven
  • MUSC 2120: The Age of Enlightenment – Mozart
  • MUSC 2130: Women in Music
  • MUSC 2140: World Music – Globalization in Sound
  • MUSC 3140: History of Opera

*Other music electives may count, including approved Special Topics courses.

The Minor in Music also requires the following:

  • 4 semesters of applied studio lessons in one area (minimum of one credit hour each semester)
  • 4 semesters of participation in an approved (one credit hour) ensemble

A C- or higher is required for all courses within the major.

Certificate in Performance

Students may elect to earn a Certificate in Performance in voice, piano, organ, guitar, or an orchestral instrument (the latter with special permission).

The Certificate in Performance requires the following:

  • MUSC 1000: Integrative Music Theory I
  • 16 credit hours of applied studio lessons in one area
  • 6 semesters of participation in an approved (one credit hour) ensemble*
  • Attendance at all recitals required by the Music Department
  • 1 shared half recital
  • 1 solo recital

*Vocalists must participate in Singers for 6 semesters.

Vocalists must also complete the following:

  • MUSC 4220: Vocal Pedagogy

A C- or higher is required for all courses within the major.
