Millsaps Studio Art Scholars Guidelines

The Art Department at Millsaps College reviews portfolios each spring seeking potential scholars in the area of Studio Art. Awards are given by the Art faculty to incoming students willing to contribute in a significant and meaningful way to the program. Millsaps Studio Art Scholars are expected to reflect the highest level of integrity as role models for all students of art.

Portfolio reviews will be scheduled on Monday afternoon, February 21, 2022If a student is unable to attend the February 21 date, please contact the Art Department Chair to schedule an alternative date when possible. Your application materials for this scholarship should include the following:

  • a portfolio of at least 8-10 artworks
  • a one-page essay describing one of the artworks in your portfolio, explaining why you chose it for this essay, and mentioning one aspect of the work that was a particular challenge for you;
  • a letter of recommendation from a teacher who can provide insight into your experience with art.

To be given priority in the scholarship selection process, we recommend that all application materials be submitted by February 14, 2022.

Send questions to Sue Carrie Drummond, Chair, Art Department, drummsc@millsaps.edu

Additional information for Art Scholarship recipients:

  • Art Scholars must register for at least one art course each year (studio courses for studio art scholars and art history courses for art history scholars)
  • Art Scholars in the studio discipline must submit a work of art to the student art exhibition every spring

While at Millsaps College, students are encouraged to explore their many interests and talents. If at any time students feel that their interests have changed, we fully support their choice to explore other areas of study.  At that time, however, we trust that students will understand that their art scholarship funds will not be renewed.
