Major/Minor Requirements

Communication Studies

Requirements for the major in Communication Studies: Requirements for the major in Communication Studies: Students may complete a major in Communication Studies with 40 semester hours in 10 courses. Required courses include:

  • COMM 2000 Introduction to Communication Studies
  • COMM 2100 History of the Media
  • ENGL 3000 Literary and Cultural Theory
  • COMM 4900 Senior Seminar

Students must also take three conceptual, historical, and/or theoretical electives from the Communication Studies offerings. One of these courses must have a COMM designation at the 3000-level or above. The other two electives can be department-approved interdisciplinary courses at the 3000-level or above.

Finally, students must complete a three-course Media Production sequence. One of these courses must be from the following list of courses:

  • ENGL 2430 Journalism
  • ENGL 3450 Writing for New Media
  • ENGL 2410 Expository Writing
  • CRWT 3200 Writing and Reading Creating Nonfiction

Two additional courses for the Media Production sequence can be selected from the list of
courses above or from the following courses:

  • ARTS 2240 Beginning Photography
  • ARTS 2260 Beginning Digital Arts
  • ARTS 3360 Intermediate Digital Arts
  • ARTS 2750 Introduction to Filmmaking
  • CSCI 2440 Multimedia Principles and Design
  • COMM 3850-52 Communications Internship (with written or visual focus)

The grade in any course fulfilling the requirements for the major must be C- or higher.

Requirements for the minor in Communication Studies: Students may elect the minor in Communication Studies with 20 semester hours in five courses, including COMM 2000 (Introduction to Communication Studies), COMM 2100 (Media History), one course chosen from the Media Production course list that appears in the description of the Communication Studies major above, and two other courses with a COMM designation, one of which must be at the 3000-level. The grade in any course fulfilling the requirements for the minor must be C- or higher.
