Major in Studio Art

(Students may count four semester hours of work in either Honors or Ford Fellowship toward this major. No more than four semester hours of internship credit can be counted.)

All students must take these beginning and intermediate courses:

  • ARTS 1000 Beginning Drawing (grade of C- or higher)
  • ARTS 1100 Beginning Painting (grade of C- or higher)
  • ARTS 1200 Beginning Printmaking (grade of C- or higher)
  • ARTS 1300 Beginning Sculpture (grade of C- or higher)
  • ARTS 2000 Intermediate Studio in Drawing (grade of C- or higher)

All students must also take two 4-credit hour art history courses (the Department highly recommends either ARTH 2100 Modern Art or ARTH 2200 Contemporary Art for one of them). 1 of the 2 may be an art-focused Ventures (FYCSFA 1010) or Connections (FYCSFA 1020) course taught by an art history faculty member.

All students must choose one advanced studio course from below. The course should be taken before ARTS 4900:

  • ARTS 3000 Advanced Studio in Drawing (grade of C- or higher)
  • ARTS 3100 Advanced Studio in Painting (grade of C- or higher)
  • ARTS 3200 Advanced Studio in Printmaking (grade of C- or higher)
  • ARTS 3300 Advanced Studio in Sculpture (grade of C- or higher)
  • ARTS 3400 Advanced Studio in Digital Arts (grade of C- or higher)

All students must take one additional studio art course for 4 credits. This may be a studio-focused Ventures (FYCSFA 1010) course taught by an art department faculty member.

  • ARTS 3901 Junior Art Colloquium (grade of C- or higher)
  • ARTS 3903 Junior Studio Art Seminar (grade of C- or higher)

  • ARTS 4903 Senior Studio Art Seminar (grade of C- or higher)

Students must also complete a comprehensive exam in their major.

Major in Studio Art with a Concentration in Digital Arts 

(Students may count four semester hours of work in either Honors or Ford Fellowship toward this major. No more than four semester hours of internship credit can be counted.)

  • ARTS 1300 Beginning Sculpture (grade of C- or higher)

Major in Art History with a Concentration in Museum Studies

(Students may count four semester hours of work in either Honors or Ford Fellowship toward this major. No more than eight semester hours of internship may be counted.)

4 art history classes of student choice must be taken. 1 of the 4 may be an art history-focused Ventures (FYCSFA 1010) or Connections (FYCSFA 1020) course taught by an art history faculty member.

Double Major in Studio Art and Art History

A student can also choose to complete a double major in studio art and art history but at least 50 percent of course work for either the studio art or art history major must be taken at Millsaps. Students may count four semester hours of work in either Honors or Ford Fellowship toward this double major. No more than four semester hours of internship credit can be counted.

The following courses must be taken:

Minor in Studio Art

(This minor is available to majors in art history and any other major outside of the Art Department. It is not allowed for majors in studio art.)

Students must take the following courses:

  • ARTS 1000 Beginning Drawing
  • ARTS 1100 Beginning Painting
  • ARTS 1200 Beginning Printmaking
  • ARTS 1300 Beginning Sculpture

Minor in Digital Arts

(This minor is available to majors in art history and any other major outside of the Art Department. It is not allowed for majors in studio art.)

Students must take the following courses:

  • ARTS 2400 Intermediate Studio in Digital Arts

Students must choose one course from below:

  • ARTS 3650 Digital Arts Internship
  • ARTS 3400 Advanced Studio in Digital Arts

One additional studio arts course, of student choice, is also required. This may be a studio-focused Ventures (FYCSFA 1010) course taught by an art department faculty member.

Minor in Art History

(This minor is available to majors in studio arts and any other major outside of the Art Department. It is not allowed for majors in art history.)

Five art history courses are required, of student choice. 1 of the 5 may be an art history-focused Ventures (FYCSFA 1010) or Connections (FYCSFA 1020) course taught by an art history faculty member.

Minor in Museum Studies

Students must meet with the Director of the Museum Studies Concentration in order to plan, in consultation with their Academic Advisor, the courses for the museum studies minor.

Students must complete an introductory course:

  • ARTH 2500: Museum Studies

Students must complete an internship. Choose one option below.

Option 1:

  • ARTH 3002: Museum Studies Internship I
  • ARTH 3102: Museum Studies Internship Readings

Option 2:

  • ARTH 3200: Museum Studies Internship II

Three additional courses (at 4 credits a piece) from at least two different departments that provide supplementary experience must also be completed. The courses need not be specifically designated as museum-focused or museum- friendly, but the expectation is that they would be courses in which the students could do a project or paper related to museums.
