In addition to the CLE, during your four days stay, you may choose from several organized adventures:
MILLSAPS' BIO-CULTURAL RESERVE OF KAXIL KIUIC: Millsaps' own Kaxil Kiuic bio-cultural reserve will be the site of our final CLE hours on environmental law. This 4,000 acre reserve in the dry jungle of the Yucatán, near ancient Maya ruins, will be the backdrop for part of our CLE hours. For a look at Kiuic, visit: http://www.kiuic.org/english_f/reserve.htm.
LOS-DOS COOKING SCHOOL: Your trip can include a day in Los Dos Cooking School where Chef David Sterling will give a class in Yucatecan
cuisine! David was recently featured on the Martha Stewart Show giving the hostess a lesson in Yucatecan cooking in his home in Mérida. Even if you aren't a cooking fan, the food, wine and impeccably restored colonial home you will enjoy are worth the trip! For more information and to read about David and Los-Dos, visit: http://www.los-dos.com/.
UXMAL: Take a half day trip to the ancient Mayan ruins at Uxmal. This UNESCO World Heritage site is the ancient home of the Maya in the Puuc region of the Yucatán. With classic architecture of the Maya, this historic and well preserved/restored site gives a perfect look into the ancient Maya way of life. For more information about Uxmal and more information about the region, visit: http://yucatantoday.com/en/topics/uxmal.
CENOTES OF CUZAMA: Come spend an afternoon at the Cenotes of Cuzama. These natural crystal clear lakes nearly 40 feet underground are a must for any adventure traveler or water lover. To have a glimpse of the Cenotes, see the following clips of our own Millsaps students visiting these natural wonders: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zu2xdp14yJI .
CITY OF MERIDA: Don't miss an afternoon tour of Mérida's colonial center. See this over 500 year old city from its 19th century mansions on the Paseo de Montejo to one of the oldest cathedrals in the Americas. Mérida should not be overlooked.
OTHER SITES IN THE YUCATAN: Of course, you can choose to come early or extend your stay in Mérida or visit the beaches of the Yucatán. Choose from the beaches in and around Progresso (30 minutes from Mérida) or choose the Maya Riviera and the world class resorts of Cancun and Playa del Carmen await. We will be happy to help advise on various locations for those extended stays.
