A Millsaps degree in political science is excellent
preparation for careers in business, law, government, journalism,
finance, politics, and education. Jackson, the center of Mississippi
state government, provides internship opportunities with governmental
agencies, non-profit organizations, and law firms. The Washington
Semester program provides direct contact with governmental departments
and other national and international agencies based in Washington
and with high-ranking leaders of politics and government.
Internships
The program makes the most of Millsaps' location
in Jackson, the state capital, to offer a host of internship opportunities
near at hand. This geographic advantage makes it possible for our
majors to pursue internships during the school year, whereas students
at other schools may have to wait until the summer to gain valuable
job experience. The department actively encourages and assists students
in obtaining internships, for which course credit may be offered.
Research
The department encourages student research, and
all majors take the course Research Methods in Political Science.
Quite often, our students present the results of their research
projects at professional conferences. Recently, Millsaps political
science majors have won best undergraduate paper awards at the Mississippi
and the Mississippi/Louisiana Political Science annual conferences.
Other Opportunities
The department has been involved in the Model
United Nations program since 1997. Since then, we've participated
in several different regional and national model-UN simulations.
Life After Millsaps
The majority of our majors go on to law school
and many go on to pursue successful careers in law, serving in many
of the prestigious law firms in the state of Mississippi and across
the country.
Degrees in political science also qualify students
for many different careers in business, law, state, local, and federal
government, journalism, international organizations and finance,
political campaigns, interest groups, and college education. One
of our majors currently works in the Office of the President of
the United States as a member of President Bush's advance staff.
Quite a few of our students have gone on to graduate school, earned
doctoral degrees and pursued careers in higher education. Many more
are school teachers, while others work in a variety of governmental
and non-governmental organizations, such as the Mississippi Secretary
of State's office, Skytel, etc.
