  Psychology

Millsaps psychology students benefit from the department's dedication to an applied scientific focus that emphasizes the application of psychological knowledge and methods to real life issues and problems. We encourage our students to engage in research with faculty mentors and maintain as extensive internship program. Majors annually score in the top one percent of students nationwide who take the Major Field Area Test in the subject. Approximately 70% of Millsaps psychology graduates go on to graduate or professional school within a year of graduation. Only the biology and chemistry departments send more students to medical school each year.

Opportunities abound for in-depth study in areas such as:

  • cognitive and sensory processes
  • counseling psychology
  • developmental psychology
  • experimental analysis of behavior
  • psychobiology and social psychology

Research

In the last five years, student research has resulted in nine journal publications and 24 conference presentations involving 51 students.

To further enhance understanding of how new information is obtained in the field, Millsaps psychology students have special research opportunities in the areas of:

  • cognitive psychology (memory, perception and attention)
  • behavioral neuroscience (appetite, taste physiology, development of feeding behavior)
  • social psychology (repressed, false and flashbulb memories, and suicide)

Internships

In 2002-2003, 35 students were placed by the department in internships at local clinical, counseling, forensic, developmental and psychiatric facilities.

Psychology Department Facilities:

The psychology department offers three main research facilities:

  • Cognitive Research Lab:
for projects involved in identifying the interconnectedness of memory, perception and attention
  • Animal Lab:
for projects involved in the regulation of feeding and taste behaviors in rodents
  • Human Subjects Lab:
for projects involved in the determination of Repressed, False, and Flashbulb memory as well as studies on Suicide.

Life After Millsaps

Millsaps' professional preparation in psychology is outstanding: 15% of the 2003 graduating class has been accepted directly into Ph.D. psychology program at institutions such as Clemson, Kansas State and Louisiana State Universities. Another 15% have been accepted into master's level programs ranging from law to communications and social work.

Psychology majors enjoy a variety of professional careers from law and medicine to clinical psychology. No matter what their subsequent career choices, Millsaps psychology majors have a deep understanding of how to think critically and psychologically about the events and concerns of their own lives. Graduates have learned how to apply psychological knowledge to raising children, coping with life's tragedies, and making life decisions.
