Backyard Brawl this Saturday
The 2008 edition of “Backyard Brawl IX” is just days away from kickoff at Harper Davis Field as 25th-ranked Mississippi College will make the trip down I-20 to take on the homestanding Millsaps College Majors. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and will be the season-opener for both teams.
With the Choctaws rallying for 21 fourth quarter points to win 27-26 last year in Clinton and both teams coming off 8-2 records, the anticipation of this year’s brawl is growing.
Millsaps is led by third-year head coach Mike DuBose, who has guided the Majors to a 15-6 mark in his first two seasons, while the visiting Chocs turn to fourth-year head coach Norman Joseph who has led MC to a 15-15 record in his first three years.
“We’ve had some success here lately that has shed new light on the program,” DuBose said. “The question is how our team will handle that success. We must stay disciplined and continue to prepare and respect every opponent the same way.”
Other weekend events include a pep rally on Friday, September 5, at 6 p.m. on Farish Street in conjunction with the Classic Brawl Festival Weekend to highlight the Backyard Brawl, Jackson State’s W.C. Gordon Football Classic and the 30th Annual Farish Street Heritage Festival.
Game tickets sold prior to Saturday are $10, with $3 going to the Millsaps athletic department. All tickets sold the day of the game are $15. To order tickets prior to the game, please contact Anne Clark at anne.clark@millsaps.edu. The Mississippi Sports Council is hosting the event.

2008 Arts & Lecture Series Announced
For 41 years the Arts & Lecture Series has offered a mixture of serious, funny and unique programs, and the 2008-09 season promises to be just as good. All programs will be in the Ford Academic Complex Recital Hall at 7 p.m.
On Wednesday, September 17, three Mississippi authors will discuss their interpretations of the Civil War during the first Arts & Lecture event. Southern Writers on the Civil War will featureDr. Jason K. Phillips, Howard Bahr and Judge Robert Evans.
