Majors Move to No. 5, take on Trinity this Saturday
Millsaps will undoubtedly face its toughest task of the year when they travel to San Antonio this weekend to tangle with the 14th-ranked TU Tigers. Trinity has won or shared 14 of the last 15 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championships, with Millsaps upsetting TU 34-12 in 2006 behind senior standout Chris Jackson’s pair of punt returns for touchdowns. The Trinity senior class and the Millsaps senior class both have two rings to represent their throne as champions, with Saturday’s game deciding who will win the third piece of bling.
“Every game is big, but this is by far the biggest game we’ve played this year,” third-year head coach Mike DuBose said. “Anytime you have an opportunity to play Trinity, you’re playing the best in the conference. Our goal is to try and get to where we can compete on a national level and they have been there for some time. We’re a good football team, but they’re not only a good football team they’re a good football program. Steve (Mohr) and his staff have developed and built an outstanding program, and just like last year we’ll have to play our best game of the season to come out on top. It’s a great opportunity for our football team and a tough challenge.”
Millsaps boasts the league’s top-ranked scoring offense (43.6 ppg) and scoring defense (12.1 ppg) through the first seven games and average 422.9 ypg of total offense. The Majors have not played a game within 20 points this season (34-14 at Belhaven; 46-26 at Centre) but have not faced an offense and defense with the caliber of Trinity’s. The second the Majors step into E.M. Stevens Stadium, the unquestionable home-field advantage of the Tigers will set in.
Leading the way offensively is senior QB and All-American hopeful Juan Joseph. The Edgard, La., native is making his second appearance in San Antonio, the first since 2005 when he made his first collegiate start as a true freshman. Joseph’s numbers rank amongst the top in the SCAC, completing 165-of-254 passes for 1,842 yards, 21 TDs and just three INTs. He also is the team’s leading rusher at 35 carries for 200 yards and two scores. Joseph has connected with 20 different receivers on the year, including top target Eric McCarty 42 times for 520 yards and eight touchdowns (t-first in the SCAC). Michael Galatas, Burt Pereira and Raymece Savage have caught 23 passes apiece and eclipsed the 200-yard mark.
Defensively, three Majors have 40+ plus tackles, with senior Michael Sims (44), Cap White (42) and Will Hawkins (40) leading the pack. Senior DB Marcus Harris has picked off a team-high four passes on the year to lead the team and is just four shy of tying the career mark of 18 set by Murray Meadows from 1988-91. Defensive lineman Denarold Anderson leads the Majors in the trenches with 35 tackles (7.0 TFL) and 2.5 sacks.
Just as it has the past two seasons, Saturday’s game will determine the automatic berth into the Division III playoffs and the right to be named SCAC Champions for 2008!
For those who can’t make it to San Antonio, the game will be broadcast live and in real time on www.atwsportscast.com. Kick off is set for 1:30 p.m.
