McElvaine to Lead Millsaps Indochina Tour in May

Vietnam & Indochina: More than Just a WarIn May, Millsaps College professor Dr. Bob McElvaine will lead a trip for Millsaps graduates and friends through Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos to examine the American War in Vietnam and the cultures in Indochina. The trip will include visits to six World Heritage sites, lodging at 4-star hotels, tours in air-conditioned vehicles and four cruises. Local English-speaking guides will supplement Dr. McElvaine’s discussions of the war and Indochinese history.

Vietnam is rapidly becoming a desired destination for American tourists. This trip promises visits to places few American tourists ever see, including Hanoi, the wonderful scenery of Ha Long Bay in northern Vietnam, the village of My Lai, Ankgor Wat and the Phnom Kulen Mountains in Cambodia and the isolated wonders of Laos.

For complete information, visit Vietnam & Indochina: More than Just a War, or contact Dr. McElvaine at mcelvrs@millsaps.edu or 601-974-1291.

Millsaps Baseball Coach Jim Page Garners 500th Win

Millsaps baseball coach Jim Page, President Frances Lucas, and Vice President of Student Life & Dean of Students Brit Katz celebrate Page's 500th win with the Majors.
Coach Jim Page

Twenty years ago, Jim Page took over a less than average Millsaps College baseball team. Two decades later, that team has turned into one of the Division III’s elite baseball programs.

"I didn't know if I'd be alive 21 years later," Page joked. "It's been a good ride and I want to keep watching the scenery and keep going. I've learned I'm a lot better coach now than I was in 1989 and Lord willing I'll be here another 20 years."

Page entered the opening weekend of the 2009 baseball season just one win shy of 500 for his storied career, as the Majors welcomed LaGrange, Rhodes and the University of the Ozarks to Twenty Field for the annual Wilson/DeMarini Classic. Trailing 8-5 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, Millsaps rallied for seven unanswered runs over the final two innings to defeat LaGrange 12-8 in its season-opener and earn Page his 500th career victory.

"What's so neat about it is seeing some of the former guys come back and them being excited for me," Page said. "I look at the guys who've been with me for a long time and what they give to this program and it's incredible. What I'll remember about No. 500 is all the memories of the players we've had, the coaches, the administration and the support of our fans."

Notes from the Millsaps SBA President

Millsaps SBA President Cree Cantrell

The new Student Body Association Executive Board at Millsaps College has hit the ground running in the new semester. Each day we meet to discuss the tough issues that surround us and strive understand each others differing views. Indeed, the spirit of Ad Excellentiam is very much alive at Millsaps. Below are three of our top initiatives for this semester. In the coming months, I will continue my correspondence with more details and updates on each of the goals.

Campus safety is of top priority.  SBA is creating a new program that allows volunteer students to get involved in the security process.

The Hall Activities Center is a vital facility to the student body.  SBA is committed to finding creative ways of supporting the HAC, and giving members of the student body additional fitness opportunities.

Controlling e-mail volume is a problem.  SBA is tackling this issue by creating a central website to post announcements and send a single daily e-mail of announcements.

I am truly excited about serving my fellow students and esteemed alumni of Millsaps as the new SBA President.  If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. Go Majors!
