Millsaps College will host the 12th annual Mary Ann Edge Memorial Golf Classic at Castlewoods Country Club in Flowood on Monday, May 4. All proceeds benefit the Millsaps College M-Club, a volunteer organization comprising alumni, parents, and friends, whose sole purpose is to enhance the athletic experience of our scholar athletes.

The tournament is held in memory of Mary Ann Edge, who for nearly three decades devoted her life to Millsaps College as an associate professor of physical education and head coach of the men’s golf team. Coach Edge’s greatest accomplishments at Millsaps came in 1992 and 1993 when she led the men’s golf team to consecutive Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships.

This year the tournament will feature former professional baseball player and manager, Art Howe, who played for the Pittsburg Pirates, the Houston Astros, and the St. Louis Cardinals and managed the Houston Astros, Oakland A’s, and New York Mets.

“This is always one the best times and events of the year for me,” said Jim Page, associate athletic director and head baseball coach. “It’s always fun to have a bunch of the alumni come back and friends in the community to join together for a wonderful day of playing golf. This is a definite win-win since it not just helps athletic department but directly goes to our student athletes who give so much of their time, energy and effort.”

For those alumni planning summer travel to the Big Apple or the nation’s capital in June, don’t forget to include a stop at one of the two great gatherings Millsaps College will be apart of – the 30th Annual Mississippi in the Park in New York City on June 13 and the 19th Annual Mississippi on the Mall on June 20 in Washington, D.C.

The theme for this year’s Mississippi in the Park picnic in Central Park is “Celebrate Mississippi” and will once again feature blues, country, folk and gospel musicians plus fried catfish and sweet tea. The first picnic took place in 1979 when a small group of native Mississippians living in New York wanted to change the perceptions both regions had of each other and offer a way for Mississippians to network with each other. Since the first picnic, every Mississippi governor has attended and supported the event.

Mississippi on the Mall is sponsor by the Mississippi Society of Washington and features catfish, hushpuppies, coleslaw, sweet tea, banana pudding, watermelon and children’s games. Millsaps representatives will be on hand at both events so come by and say hello.

Heritage Celebrates 40 Years

A panel of former and current Heritage faculty and students will reflect on their experiences in Millsaps’ unique humanities course invented in 1968 - first called Heritage of the West, now Heritage of the West in World Perspective - on Friday, April 3 at 12:30 p.m. in the Ford Academic Complex.

New Communications Major Announced

In the fall of 2009 Millsaps College will debut a new communications major which will combine practical skills in fields like journalism and public relations, while allowing students to explore communications in a liberal arts environment stressing critical thinking, global awareness, and historical consciousness.

“Millsaps College has a history of offering exceptional academic programs,” said Dr. Richard A. Smith, senior vice-president and dean of the College. “This new program builds on our existing strength of interdisciplinary programs by using the College’s resources in a way to react to changing student interests and to new needs in the marketplace.”

Communications is consistently one of the top 10 majors among college students and provides for multiple career opportunities upon graduation. The field has changed drastically in the last century as radio, television and then the internet joined newspapers and other print media in changing the way people communicate and absorb news.
