Par∙tic∙i∙pate - to Take Part or to Have a Share

Participate: the Millsaps Annual Fund
Ways to Give to Millsaps College
The Bowl, Millsaps College campus
Alumni participation is more important than you may realize. College rankings use alumni participation as a key measure of a college's impact and worth to its graduates. Foundations, corporations and individuals rely on participation rates to help decide whether or not their gift will be a wise investment.

We all have a share in Millsaps' future. The worth of our degree from Millsaps is measured every time we submit a resume, list our bio on a corporate website or FACEBOOK, apply to graduate school, or enter into casual conversation that turns to one's alma mater.

Quite frankly, for Millsaps College to continue to move forward we need better alumni participation rates. It is that simple.

Participation is not about the size of the gift, but rather, the intent. The economy continues to be a challenge, many of us have local charities that we give to, and quite a number of us are in graduate school or still paying off college loans, often while raising a family.

Millsaps College was founded in 1890. This year we are celebrating our 120th year and entering a new era under the leadership of Rob Pearigen. 1890 seems like an amount that all of us could wrap around ... no, not $1,890, but $18.90.

So, let's take part and have a share in the future of Millsaps by making a gift and helping boost alumni participation this year. You can do this by making a gift of $18.90 (or any amount) online before June 30th. Just visit our secure online donor form, it's that easy.

We are looking for an increase of 300 alumni donations this year.  Of course, we would be delighted to have more! And, by the way, an $18.90 gift from alumni who are married to alumni counts as two!

If you prefer not to make your gift online, or if you have any questions, please contact Hunter Scott at 601-974-1036 or hunter.scott@millsaps.edu.

Dr. Steven Smith, professor of philosophy and religion, has been appointed the first holder of the Jennie Carlisle Golding Chair in Philosophy, and Dr. Greg Miller, professor of English, has been appointed the first holder of the Janice Trimble Chair in English.

"In their careers at Millsaps, Steve and Greg have complied remarkable records of achievement as teachers, scholars, and leaders," said Dr. David C. Davis, interim vice president and dean of the College. "They have consistently exceeded the high standards the College sets for full professors and not surprisingly have earned many commendations in teaching, scholarship, and service."

The chairs are intended to recognize and reward faculty members in the Department of Philosophy and the Department of English who are full professors and who have consistently exceeded the standards of full professors. Those standards include outstanding teaching; distinguished faculty leadership and devoted service to students, the faculty and the College and mature scholarship in the individual's subject area or widely acclaimed accomplishments in the creative arts. Appointment to each chair is for a five-year renewable term.

Millsaps Grad to Study in Jordan Thanks to Fulbright Fellowship

Nadia Al HashimiNadia AlHashimi, a 2010 Millsaps graduate, will spend a year studying the lives and experiences of women in Jordan thanks to a Fulbright Fellowship, awarded by the U.S. Department of State.

"I will be learning firsthand about the lives and experiences of women in Jordan. I will travel from the urban centers to nomadic Bedouin groups using the same tools that I learned in the classroom and in the northern Albanian mountains to work next to women in Jordan," she said. "I hope to gain new ways of understanding so that when I return to a graduate program in the United States, I can help build a bridge of mutual understanding between cultures that have long stood on opposites sides of the expanse."

AlHashimi is among an estimated 1,600 students to receive Fulbright Fellowships this year. The awards offer recent graduates, postgraduate candidates, and developing professionals and artists opportunities to conduct study and research abroad.

AlHashimi is the second Millsaps student in three years to receive a Fulbright Fellowship. Chelsi West received a Fulbright Fellowship in 2008 that funded her research and study in Albania.
