JACKSON, Miss. —The Millsaps Majors defeated the Belhaven Blazers by a score of 5-4 tonight at Smith-Wills Stadium. The Majors scored their first run of the game in the top of the second inning when first basemen Luke Morrow executed a textbook suicide squeeze with the bases loaded and two outs. The gutsy move paid off – scoring right fielder Garner Wetzel from third and tying the game at one run a piece.
The game moved back and forth until the top of the sixth inning when pinch hitter Derrik Boland drove in two runs on a single down the right field line. With those two runs across, Millsaps held a two run lead heading into the late innings.
In the ninth, with a two run lead head coach Jim Page brought in right hander Tal Hendrix for a save attempt. Hendrix started the inning shaky, allowing one run on two hits and a walk. With the bases loaded and the winning run on second base, Hendrix struck out two batters and induced a fly out to left field to end the inning and the game. Hendrix earns his first save of the season.
The win for the Majors tonight is awarded to Drew Maddox (2-1). Maddox pitched 3 1/3 innings of middle relief allowed one run on two hits.
For the Majors, first baseman Luke Morrow was 3-3 at the plate with one double and 2 RBI’s.
