Senior Doug Garner moved into
first place in career wins in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
with a complete game 10-2 win over Trinity University in game one
of a doubleheader.
The Majors would drop game two 10-7, but
Garner's achievement was the highlight of the day. The Tigers took
a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning, with seperate runs
in the second and fourth. The Major offense took control in the
bottom of the fourth, mounting a furious five run rally, highlighted
by doubles from Jason Hadley and Sherwood Collette.
The Majors were not finished, as they put
another five spot up on the Tigers the following inning. The Majors
were the painful benefactors of three consecutive hit batsmen with
the bases loaded.
Garner (4-0) slammed the door on any chance
the Tigers had to come back, allowing only two hits after the fourth
inning and striking out five Tigers. Garner totaled nine strikeouts
on the afternoon, while scattering six hits and giving up two runs,
one of which was earned.
Ben Wilson and Collette were the only Majors
with multiple hits as the home team only had seven hits.
The Majors receive another solid start from
Todd Kindler in game two; however, the bullpen could not stop a
Tiger offense that amassed 12 hits in the game.
The Majors took a 1-0 lead in the first,
when leadoff man Stuart Wood scored an an RBI single by Garner Wetzel.
The Majors had a chance to do more damage with the bases loaded
and one out; however, Hunter Owen hit into a 5-2-3 double play.
Trinity answered back the next inning with
two runs on three hits and scored single runs in the fourth and
fifith tok take a 4-2 lead at the stretch. The Millsaps bats would
not be silenced, as Garner Wetzel mashed a two-run homer over the
right-center wall to tie the game at 4.
Trinity regained the lead with three runs
in the eighth of reliever John Fox; however, the Majors would once
again rally. Ryan Skertich belted a three-run shot over the right-field
wall to tie the game once more at eight.
This one, however, belonged to the Tigers.
Trinity pushed three across the plate of Fox in the ninth, highlighted
by first-baseman Nick Vera's two-run single.
The Majors threartened in the ninth, with
singles from Ben Wilson and Hunter Abrams; however, Wood was retired
on a fly ball and Jason Hadley struck out swinging to end the game.
John Fox took the loss for the Majors, giving
up six runs (five earned) and walking four. Starter Todd Kindler
gave up four runs (two earned), on seven hits, with six strike outs
and two walks. Joe Brown relieved starter Drew Bignall to pick up
the win for the Tigers.
