JACKSON, Miss. — After a two hour rain delay, the Millsaps Majors faced off against the Illinois Wesleyan Titans Saturday, March 18. Playing at home on Twenty Field, the Majors hoped to add another victory to their 14 – 4 record when heading into the afternoon match-up.
With John Fox on the mound, the Majors took the early lead in the bottom of the first. After the Titans went three and out, Millsaps started off with a single by lead off hitter Nick Crawford, followed by a single from left fielder Jason Hadley. Crawford eventually scored off of a Garner Wetzel RBI to give the Majors the 1-0 advantage at the end of the first.
The Titans took the lead from the Majors in the third as they got three hits and scored two runs in the inning. Millsaps quickly retaliated, however, in the fourth inning as last week’s SCAC player of the week Luke Morrow doubled to send Hunter Abrams home for the Majors. Morrow later scored off of a Tait Hendrix single. The two runs put Millsaps back on top by a score of 3-2.
Illinois Wesleyan and Millsaps had big fifth and sixth innings. The Titans scored four runs off of four hits, including two doubles in the fifth. They added two more runs in the sixth – one off of an error and one off of a wild pitch. The Majors were equally productive, scoring three runs off of three hits in the fifth. Millsaps then added two more runs in the sixth. At the end of the two innings, the score was tied at eight runs a piece.
After the sixth, the Majors were unable to produce any more runs. Illinois Wesleyan took advantage of the late game drought and pushed two runs across the plate in the eighth inning, winning the game 10-8. Tal Hendrix takes the loss from the mound for the Majors.
Millsaps will get a rematch with Illinois Wesleyan tomorrow, Sunday, March 19.
