JACKSON, Miss — The Millsaps Majors dropped only their second game of the Cowboy Maloney Series tonight, losing 6-1 to Mississippi College at Smith-Wills Stadium. The Majors fall to 24-9 on the season and the Choctaws improve to 21-12.
The Choctaws jumped out to a big 5-0 lead in the first inning. The Choctaws scored five runs on five hits and were fueled in part by a 2 run homer by center fielder Sam Self.
The Majors answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first when right fielder Garner Wetzel drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
These were the only runs that either team was able to manage until the top of the eighth inning when the Choctaws put up one more run on the board. Shortstop Jody Britt drove in John Birdsong with a single to left field.
The loss went to Millsaps starting pitcher Todd Kindler (6-2). The Majors used three other pitchers in relief – Jay Hollenbeck threw five innings and gave up no runs on four hits and struck out six batters. The win tonight was awarded to Carl Upton (3-0).
