JACKSON, Miss. — The Majors baseball team defeated the Piedmont College Lions by a final score of 17-3 earlier today at Twenty Field. This brings the Majors season record to 11-3 (6-2). The Lions fall to 6-5 on the season.
Both teams started the game slow, going three and out in the opening inning. After playing another scoreless inning, Piedmont was eventually able to put a run on the board in the top of the third. Heading into the fourth with a one run advantage, the Lions scored again after their lead off batter singled up the middle. The Lions held the 2-0 lead before Millsaps was able to generate any offense at all.
The offense came in spurts for the Majors today – all in one inning, to be exact. The bottom of the 5th inning saw an offensive explosion for the Majors, who were previously scoreless with only 1 hit. Down to runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Majors began an offensive outburst that allowed the Millsaps to bat around the order twice.
Eight of the Majors runs came on grand slam homeruns; junior first basemen Luke Morrow chimed in first followed 8 batters later by senior right fielder Garner Wetzel with a grand slam of his own. On the day, Luke Morrow was 3-5 at the plate with 6 RBI. Wetzel went 1-4 with 5 RBI. The homeruns today was the first of the year for Morrow and Wetzel’s second.
The Majors gave up one more run in the contest - a solo home run off of senior right hander Brad Mizerany pitching in relief.
Freshman left-hander Tait Hendrix earned the win today, improving his record to 1-0. Tait pitched 5 innings giving up 2 runs on 5 hits. Hendrix struck out 6 batters and walked 2.
The Majors next home game is on Thursday, March 7 versus Rust College at Twenty Field.
