Majors Fight Back, Lose to Spartans 5-4

Three early inning errors, two in a four-run fifth inning, Thursday eventually cost the #5 seed Millsaps Majors the win against Manchester College 5-4 in the Division III Mideast Regional held at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind.

The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference’s career wins leader (32), Doug Garner (7-3 3.63 ERA), took the loss after throwing 4.1 innings allowing four runs, one earned, on five hits, walking one and striking out two Spartan batters.  Freshman pinch-hitter Hunter Abrams delivered with the bases loaded in the eighth inning with a two-run double bringing the Majors within a run at 5-4.  The Majors lauded 1-2-3-4 hitters, which includes SCAC Player of the Year and Ferriss Trophy Finalist Garner Wetzel, were held in check by Spartan starter Adam Augustine (9-1 2.13 ERA) going a combined 4-16 with one RBI.  Wetzel went 1-4 with no RBI and one run scored.

Tal Hendrix threw the final 3.2 innings for the Majors allowing one earned run on four hits.  Sophomore John Pacillo went 3-5 for the Majors and designated hitter Derrik Boland drove in run as did Skertich.  The Majors hit five doubles including two by lead-off man Nick Crawford.  The Majors left 11 runners on base compared to Manchester’s six.  Augustine threw 132 pitches compared to Garner’s 69.

The Majors will meet the #6 seed Adrian (MI) Bulldogs at Art Nehf Field Friday at Noon (CST).
