JACKSON – Senior forward Rodney
Rogan pumped
in his third-straight 20-point game and Millsaps scored 29 points off
24 Southwestern turnovers to win its sixth-straight at home to open the
season, 66-57, and improve to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in the league standings.
Millsaps forced 16 Pirate turnovers and took an 18-point lead, 43-25,
into intermission on the heels of 55 percent shooting from the floor
and 13 points from junior Chris Sanders and 10
from junior Chad Songy. They were a combined 9-of-12 from the floor,
including 5-of-7 from beyond the arc.
The Majors never trailed in the contest and led by as many as 20 midway
through the second half before Southwestern closed the final 4:05 on
a 13-2 run to make the final margin nine points.
Despite outscoring the Millsaps bench by an overwhelming 47-9 gap, Southwestern
dropped its first game in league play to fall to 5-6 overall and 2-1
in SCAC play. All three leading scorers came off the bench, led by Ross
Hayes' 13 and Ben Schleif and Goran Stojcic's 11.
Rogan led all scorers with 21 points, while Sanders added 15 and Songy
had 13. In a slow shooting night, senior guard Lorenzo
Bailey picked
up a game-high five assists.
Millsaps will aim for its first seven-game win streak since the 2001-02
season tomorrow night, hosting Trinity University (10-1, 3-0 SCAC) at
8 p.m. The Tigers fell out of this week's D3hoops Top 25 Poll and will
be looking to knock off the Majors for a sixth-straight time.
