HOLLY SPRINGS -- Rust College benefited from five different
scorers in double figures and a season-high 58 percent shooting from
3-point land in a 92-70 win over the visiting Millsaps Majors on Monday
night in front of nearly 500 fans at the W. A. McMillan Multipurpose
Center in Holly Springs.
Not only did Rust College shoot an impressive 60 percent from the floor,
but they shot lights out from beyond the arc as well. The Bearcats connected
on 14-of-24 attempts, including six from Darnell Toy, three from both
Marc Phillips and Dewit Gabrekidan and two from Eric Jackson.
Millsaps (7-6, 2-1 SCAC) held its own from the floor, shooting a solid
54 percent for the game and a stellar 65 percent in the first half.
The Bearcats, however proved to be too much for the Majors in the second
half, outscoring Millsaps 55-29 thanks in part to 37 bench points and
12-of-16 shooting from beyond the free throw line.
Junior Edrick Montgomery was just a rebound shy of his third double-double
of the season, pouring in 27 points on 12-of-13 shooting and chipping
in nine boards, while fellow junior Lorenzo Bailey added 14 points and
a pair of assists.
The Majors will return home this weekend for a two-game homestand,
playing host to Oglethorpe on Jan. 12 and Sewanee on Jan. 14. Friday’s
game tips off at 8 p.m. with Sunday’s game slated for a 1 p.m.
start.
