SHERMAN, Texas – Junior Chris
Sanders earned his first career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds
and senior Edrick Montgomery added his second double-double in as many
games with 22 points and 15 boards as Millsaps cruised to an 85-54 SCAC
win over Austin College at Hughey Gym on Sunday afternoon.
It was the Majors' largest SCAC win since a 35-point win over Oglethorpe
University during the 2000-01 championship season. Millsaps won
that game by a 101-66 score.
Two other Majors notched double figures in addition to Montgomery and
Sanders, with senior Lorenzo Bailey scoring 11 and junior Chad
Songy adding 10. They were a combined 6-of-13 from 3-point range as Bailey
bumped his Millsaps career-leading total to 185.
The 'Roos were led by Kola Alade with 19 points on 5-of-9 shooting from
beyond the arc and Chris Sturtevant who scored 14 points - 12 in the
second half - and grabbed eight boards.
Millsaps (12-1, 5-0 SCAC) pulled away from an eight-point, 35-27,
lead at halftime with 47 percent shooting in the second half and a 50-27
edge on the scoreboard. After the 'Roos pulled to within five points
in the opening minutes of the second, the Majors put together a 19-4
run as Songy knocked down a pair of 3s and Allen
Odum scored six
of his nine points.
Austin College (4-9, 1-4 SCAC) was held to 35
percent shooting in the frame, including just 2-of-13 from long distance.
Sturtevant and Alade combined for 21 of the 'Roos 27 points.
The Majors
scored 24 points off 21 Austin College turnovers and took advantage of
a 48-37 rebounding edge with 20 offensive boards, led by
Montgomery
with
seven and Sanders and Odum with four apiece. They also picked up 17 assists
in the game to add to their league-leading total of 16.97 per contest.
Millsaps will close out a three-game road swing Monday evening at the
University of Dallas with tipoff set for 5 p.m. at the Maher Center.
The Majors fell to the Crusaders, 73-64, in the Rhodes Thanksgiving Tournament
last
season.
