MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The
Majors hopes of reaching the NCAA Tournament were officially eliminated
on Saturday evening in the semifinal round of the SCAC Tournament, falling
to the Centre College Colonels by a score of 75-59.
Millsaps, who had posted a 15-3 record since Christmas Break, knocked
off Hendrix College 77-64 in Friday's opening-round to reach the semifinals
for the first time under head coach Tim Wise.
The 16-point loss on Saturday was the third worst of the season for
the Majors, as they fell to 0-3 in games when scoring 60 points or less.
Reigning SCAC Tournament champion Centre (22-4, 12-2 SCAC) shot 45 percent
from the floor for the game, outscored the Majors' bench 19-8 and did
a great job getting to the charity stripe.
The difference in
the game was free throws, as the Colonels shot 25-of-33 (71 percent)
from the line while the Majors were 8-of-17 (47 percent).
Four different scorers were in double figures for Centre, including
SCAC Player of the Year Matt Nestheide, who had 12 points, four assists
and three steals.
Offensively for Millsaps, All-SCAC First-Team selection Edrick Montgomery
and All-SCAC Honorable Mention Lorenzo Bailey led the way with 14 points
apiece, while Allen Odum chipped in 12 points and a game-high five steals.
Montgomery, who finished the season with the league's second-most double-doubles
(10), had nine rebounds to go along with his 14 points. It marks the
eighth time of the season the junior fell a rebound shy of posting a
double-double.
Millsaps' season comes to a close with the Centre loss, a day before
reaching the 18-win plateau for only the seventh time in school history.
The Colonels and Trinity Tigers will play at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday for
the championship and automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Selection Day for the Div. III Men's Basketball Tournament is Monday,
Feb. 26, at 9 a.m.
