STERLING, Va. -- With the Division III men's basketball
season three games away from crowning the National Champion in
Salem, Va., on March 17, D3hoops.com has released its 2006-07 All-Region
teams with 638 players nominated nationwide.
Players were nominated for these
awards by the Sports Information Directors at the various schools, who
were contacted several times as the season wound down to remind them
to make their players eligible. The ballot was then made available to
SIDs, who voted for 10 players in their region, including six frontcourt
players and four backcourt players to insure balance.
Regions that have fewer than 40 Division III teams have two teams, while
all other regions have three teams.
Junior forward Edrick Montgomery finds himself on this year's
All-South Region Second Team, becoming the third Millsaps student-athlete
to earn D3hoops.com All-Region honors since its
emergence during the 2001-02 season.
The Pearl native joins Thomas Adams (2002-03
Second Team) and Daniel Waguespack (2001-02 Third Team) as the only three
Millsaps athletes to earn the prestigious end of the year award.
With four scorers averaging double figures out of the Majors' starting
five, Montgomery received great support from his teammates to finish
tied for first in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
with 9.8 rebounds per contest and second in the SCAC with 17.1
points per
game.
A unanimous First Team All-SCAC selection, Montgomery fell just
two points shy of Matt Netheside of Centre College for Player
of the Year accolades while ranking amongst the Top 10 in nearly every
statistical category.
Montgomery was first in the league in defensive rebounds (7.19/game),
second in field goal percentage (.547), third in blocks (27), fourth
in offensive rebounds (2.59/game), ninth in steals (38) and 10th in free
throw percentage (.658).
Millsaps finished the 2006-07 campaign with the seventh best record in
school history, ending the year in the second round of the SCAC Tournament
with an 18-9 mark. The Majors, who don't lose any seniors from this year's
squad, hope to return all five starters including a handful of underclassmen.
