JACKSON --
After jumping out to a quick 2-0 start to open the 2006-07 season,
Millsaps dropped its first game of the season last night, falling
to neighbor Belhaven College 69-60 before an announced crowd
of 500 at Rugg Arena.
Belhaven
(4-3) took advantage of a poor shooting night for Millsaps and
had four different scorers in double digits, including Bobby
Johnson
who
poured
in 20 points,
seven
rebounds,
five blocks,
four steals and two assists in the 9-point win. The Blazers also
controlled the game on the glass, outrebounding the Majors 44-31
including a team-high 12 boards from Jeff Sullivan.
Despite
outscoring the Blazers 37-36 in the second half, Millsaps (2-1)
couldn't overcome 20.8 percent shooting in the first half
and a 10-point halftime deficit, dropping its first contest of
the year.
"We didn't execute well offensively," head coach Tim Wise said.
"We didn't shoot well from the field and it showed by shooting
under 30 percent for the game."
Edrick
Montgomery led the way for the Majors, falling a point shy of
a double-double, with 14 points and nine rebounds on 3-of-10
shooting. Lorenzo Bailey was the only other Major in double figures,
chipping
in
15 points on 5-of-17 shooting. Last
night's contest with Belhaven begins an 11-game road swing that
covers Mississippi, Tennessee, Texas, Florida and Georgia from
Nov. 21-Jan. 8. The Majors will not play another home game until
Friday,
Jan.
12, playing host to Oglethorpe University at 8 p.m. in
the Hangar Dome.
